The MITRE Corporation, a major supplier to the Pentagon and U.S. intelligence agencies, is partnering with Nvidia to develop a $20 million supercomputer to enhance artificial intelligence capabilities within the U.S. federal government. The project aims to streamline governmental functions and aligns with the Biden administration’s push to boost AI research and deployment across federal agencies.

The MITRE Corporation, a key supplier to the Pentagon and U.S. intelligence agencies, is partnering with Nvidia to construct a $20 million supercomputer aimed at enhancing artificial intelligence capabilities across the U.S. federal government. Announced on Tuesday, MITRE said this project will expedite various governmental functions like Medicare and tax filings.

The supercomputer, set to be operational later this year in Ashburn, Virginia, represents a significant move in line with the Biden administration’s recent executive order to accelerate AI research and deployment across federal agencies. Charles Clancy, senior vice president of MITRE, emphasized the potential for AI to improve governmental efficiency.

MITRE, a not-for-profit research organization founded in 1958, has a long history of providing advanced technical products for U.S. soldiers and spies, including surveillance and cybersecurity technologies. The new supercomputer will utilize 256 GPUs from Nvidia, a leading chipmaker whose stock has surged by over 200% in the past year.

Anthony Robbins, vice president of federal for Nvidia, noted that the AI infrastructure would help secure government systems against cyber threats and assist in fraud detection, among other tasks. Other federal agencies and contractors are also ramping up AI initiatives following the executive order.
