AI-equipped cameras trialled on Midlands motorways like M6 to spot drivers breaking phone use and seatbelt laws. The initiative aims to improve road safety with plans for expansion over coming years.
New AI-equipped cameras capable of detecting drivers using their phones or not wearing seatbelts are currently being trialled on motorways in the Midlands, including the M6 and possibly the M5. The trials, initiated by West Mercia Police, aim to improve road safety and are expected to expand over the next few years.
The advanced technology allows the cameras to identify offences such as phone use and seatbelt violations, even in moving traffic. Recently tightened laws consider touching a phone while driving an offence, yet the practice remains common, particularly at traffic lights or in slow-moving traffic.
Louise Thomas from Confused.com explained that AI cameras are seen as a means to enhance road safety by deterring distracted driving. While nearly half of UK drivers believe these cameras will make roads safer, around 21% view them as an invasion of privacy. Offenders face fines of £200 and up to six penalty points, with the potential for driving bans in severe cases.
