Artificial intelligence (AI) is set to bring significant changes to education by offering personalised learning tools and addressing equity issues. Despite the potential benefits, concerns around plagiarism, inaccuracies, biases, and data privacy highlight the need for careful integration and government policies.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to significantly impact education, with discussions often focusing on the risks of plagiarism. However, AI promises to revolutionize learning by offering personalized educational tools and addressing equity issues. Hadi Partovi of Code.org highlights AI’s potential as a major educational platform.

AI-powered tools like Khan Academy’s Khanmigo provide personalized tutoring by adapting to student needs in real-time. Joseph South from the International Society for Technology in Education notes that generative AI could make expert tutoring accessible to a wider audience. A University of Oxford study revealed that Ghanaian students using an AI-powered math tutor showed higher growth scores.

AI’s applications extend beyond tutoring. It can simulate real-world working environments, assist educators in creating personalized lesson plans, and generate innovative case studies in business schools. This technology could save educators significant time, potentially preventing $77 billion in unpaid overtime in the US, according to a report by Twinkl.

However, challenges remain. AI can present inaccurate information and develop biases. There are also privacy concerns regarding student data. Emily DeJeu from Carnegie Mellon University and Christophe Mallet from Bodyswaps emphasize the need for careful integration of AI to avoid excessive reliance and ensure proper use.

Partovi suggests the need for government policies to guide AI use in education. Despite the risks, he asserts that embracing AI in education is necessary as the world evolves.
