The US Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission have launched investigations into major players such as Microsoft, OpenAI, and Nvidia in the artificial intelligence market over potential antitrust violations, reflecting global efforts to regulate the rapidly expanding AI industry.
US Regulators Investigate AI Market for Antitrust Violations
The US Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have initiated investigations into prominent companies in the artificial intelligence (AI) market. The focus is on Microsoft, OpenAI, and Nvidia regarding potential breaches of antitrust laws which prioritize fair competition and prevent monopolies.
The DOJ will investigate Nvidia, a leading manufacturer of AI system chips, and their compliance with antitrust laws. Concurrently, the FTC will look into OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and Microsoft, a significant investor in OpenAI and other AI ventures. Additionally, the FTC is scrutinizing a recent deal between Microsoft and startup Inflection AI to circumvent an antitrust review.
This decision follows the FTC’s January directive to OpenAI, Microsoft, Google owner Alphabet, Amazon, and startup Anthropic to furnish details about their investments and partnerships in the generative AI field.
Jonathan Kanter, Antitrust Chief at the DOJ, emphasized the agency’s commitment to examining “monopoly choke points” and ensuring a competitive landscape in the emerging technology sector. FTC Chair Lina Khan and Kanter have both highlighted the urgency of these investigations to regulate the swiftly expanding AI industry.
The investigations come amidst growing global regulatory actions, including the European Union’s recent comprehensive AI legislation.
