MIT Develops AI Chatbot to Simulate User’s Future Self

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are developing an AI-powered chatbot called “Future You,” designed to simulate conversations with one’s older self. Using digitally aged images and synthetic memories, the chatbot aims to encourage long-term thinking and behavior change by providing advice such as eating healthier, drinking less, and maintaining family connections.

The initiative builds on various socio-scientific theories that highlight common human flaws in planning for the future and making logical decisions. The chatbot’s purpose is to promote better future-oriented decisions by leveraging the simulated wisdom of one’s older self.

Location: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Timeframe: Research ongoing as of June 2024

Audience: General public interested in AI and self-improvement technologies

This project aligns with broader efforts in the tech industry to use artificial intelligence for personal development, although it has sparked discussions about its efficacy compared to traditional sources of wisdom like literature and art.
