Apple is set to introduce new artificial intelligence (AI) features for its iPhone at the upcoming Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), partnering with OpenAI to enhance Siri with generative AI capabilities. The move aims to drive hardware upgrades and strengthen Apple’s market competitiveness in the tech industry.

Apple is set to unveil new artificial intelligence (AI) features for its iPhone at the annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on Monday. This follows a trend where Apple has not introduced a significant reason for users to upgrade their iPhones since the incorporation of 5G in the iPhone 12, which was released four years ago.

Last year, the iPhone accounted for over half of Apple’s total revenue, yet sales growth has lagged due to longer upgrade cycles and fierce competition, particularly in China. The introduction of AI features is viewed as critical to stimulate another upgrade cycle and potentially boost Apple’s market competitiveness.

At WWDC, Apple is expected to showcase generative AI capabilities integrated into its iOS and Siri, which could revolutionize the utility of its popular personal assistant. These updates may include advanced functionalities like recalling specific photos or answering detailed queries about various topics. The capability to draft emails or summarize texts could also be on the horizon.

In a strategic move, Apple has collaborated with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, to incorporate more conversational and versatile AI elements into Siri. This new AI system, branded as “Apple Intelligence,” aims to deliver a more interactive experience. Unlike its competitors, Apple plans to maintain a focus on user privacy by processing many AI tasks directly on the device rather than in remote data centers.

The effectiveness of these new AI features in driving hardware upgrades remains to be seen. Analysts have speculated that if the new AI tools are compelling and not backward-compatible with older iPhone models, this could significantly increase Apple’s stock. Conversely, if the features are unremarkable or available on older devices, the impact could be minimal.

Overall, the imminent introduction of these AI features positions Apple to potentially reinvigorate its iPhone sales and reassert its leadership in the competitive tech landscape.
