Safer Roads Humber deploys an AI-powered mobile camera to detect drivers using mobile phones and not wearing seatbelts in East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire as part of a UK-wide trial by National Highways. Developed by Acusensus, the camera will take photos for review by AI software and authorities for potential violations, following successful trials in Devon and Cornwall.

An AI-powered mobile camera is being deployed by Safer Roads Humber to monitor drivers in East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire. The initiative began on June 10, 2024, and will run for a week. The camera, developed by Australian road safety company Acusensus, is designed to detect drivers using mobile phones and not wearing seatbelts. This marks the second deployment in the area as part of a UK-wide trial by National Highways.

The camera will take photos of drivers from a trailer stationed by the roadside. The images will be initially reviewed by AI software for potential violations. Any flagged images will then undergo a secondary review by Safer Roads Humber or National Highways before any fines or prosecutions are issued.

The AI system previously detected nearly 300 violations in just three days during trials in Devon and Cornwall. Penalties for offenders include fines and the possibility of points on their driving licenses. The operation schedule and locations for the camera deployments are listed on the Safer Roads Humber website.
