Former Nextdoor CEO Sarah Friar appointed as OpenAI’s first CFO, while Kevin Weil joins as Chief Product Officer. Apple integrates OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Rewrite tool into its platforms. Departures of pivotal figures in safety initiatives lead to internal challenges and calls for enhanced transparency.

OpenAI has announced two key executive appointments amid significant developments and changes within the company. Former CEO of Nextdoor and CFO of Square, Sarah Friar, will step in as OpenAI’s first Chief Financial Officer. Additionally, Kevin Weil, who previously held significant roles at Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, has been appointed Chief Product Officer. This strategic addition aims to enhance OpenAI’s operations and product development initiatives.

These appointments coincide with OpenAI’s collaboration with Apple, revealed at Apple’s annual developer conference. OpenAI’s ChatGPT will be integrated into Apple’s tools, including Siri, and a new writing tool named Rewrite, across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

The leadership changes follow the departure of co-founder Ilya Sutskever and researcher Jan Leike, both pivotal figures in OpenAI’s AI safety initiatives. Leike cited disagreements over the company’s safety priorities as his reason for leaving. Following these departures, the Superalignment team, dedicated to AI risk mitigation, was dissolved. Leike has since joined AI company Anthropic, known for its safety-oriented approach.

Additionally, recent events have seen past and present OpenAI employees expressing concerns about AI safety through an open letter, advocating for enhanced whistleblower protections and transparency. These internal challenges come after the brief ousting and subsequent reinstatement of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in late 2023, which was also tied to safety concerns.

Sam Altman emphasized that the expertise of Friar and Weil is crucial as OpenAI embarks on new growth phases and partnerships.
