NetApp’s ONTAP Autonomous Ransomware Protection with Artificial Intelligence receives a AAA rating from SE Labs, boasting a 99% detection rate. The system aims to provide fast and precise detection to mitigate the impact of ransomware attacks and enhance cyber resilience.

NetApp Ransomware Detection System Receives Top Rating

June 26, 2024 – San Jose, California

NetApp®, a company known for its data infrastructure services, has announced that its NetApp ONTAP® Autonomous Ransomware Protection with Artificial Intelligence (ARP/AI) has received a AAA rating from SE Labs. SE Labs is an independent organisation that evaluates security products and services. The rating underscores the effectiveness of NetApp’s AI-driven ransomware detection, which reportedly boasts a 99 percent detection rate with no false positives.

Rapid Detection Essential in Cybersecurity

Ransomware attacks pose significant threats to businesses, potentially causing widespread disruptions in mere seconds. Fast, automated, and precise detection and response systems are crucial for mitigating such damage. NetApp’s ARP/AI solution aims to bridge this critical gap by integrating AI-powered detection into primary storage systems, thereby reducing the impact of cybersecurity threats in real-time.

Testing Validates High Detection Rates

SE Labs validated the claims made by NetApp, rigorously testing the ARP/AI against hundreds of ransomware variants. The results were impressive, with a notable 99 percent detection rate for advanced ransomware and a perfect score for recognising legitimate files without false alarms. This performance suggests that the system is efficient in a business environment without exacerbating issues of alert fatigue, a common problem in cybersecurity.

Advancements in Intelligent Data Infrastructure

David Rajan, Vice President of Research & Data Science at NetApp, emphasised that reliable data security against both internal and external threats is essential for intelligent data infrastructure. Such systems enable customers to transform disruptions into opportunities. The validation from SE Labs indicates that NetApp is not only helping with AI adoption but also using AI to enhance its data services.

The company has recently launched more powerful all-flash storage systems designed to handle AI workloads, built on NetApp’s secure storage foundation. This development aligns with the increasing demand for robust and secure data management solutions in enterprises dealing with large volumes of data.

Industry Milestone

Dr. Arun Gururajan, a key figure at NetApp, highlighted the significance of this milestone. He stated that NetApp is the first storage vendor to provide AI-driven on-box ransomware detection validated by an independent body. He criticised traditional ransomware detection methods that rely solely on backup data, pointing out they are often too slow to be effective. The real-time detection capability of NetApp’s ARP/AI offers a more robust defence against ransomware threats.

Improving Cyber Resilience

Integrating ransomware detection into storage systems allows organisations to bolster their cyber resilience while streamlining the required operational efforts. NetApp ARP/AI’s technology continuously adapts to new ransomware variants, ensuring that it remains effective against evolving threats.

Future-Proof Protection

An important aspect of NetApp ARP/AI is its continuous retraining on the latest ransomware strains, providing a future-proof solution against the rapidly changing landscape of cyber threats. This adaptability is crucial as ransomware tactics become increasingly sophisticated.

Availability

Currently, NetApp ARP/AI is in its tech preview stage. Interested parties can join by contacting their NetApp sales representatives.

NetApp’s advancements in AI-driven ransomware detection signify a pivotal moment in cybersecurity, particularly for organisations looking to enhance their data infrastructure’s resilience against increasingly frequent and sophisticated ransomware attacks.

NetApp offers unified data storage, integrated data services, and CloudOps solutions, aiming to provide seamless data management and robust cyber resilience. As an enterprise-grade storage service natively embedded in major cloud platforms, NetApp supports businesses in leveraging data for various applications, including AI workloads.

With this latest achievement, NetApp continues to position itself as a leader in secure data management, blending advanced AI capabilities with practical applications to safeguard enterprise data.
