CO2 AI has introduced a cutting-edge solution for computing carbon emissions of various products, aiming to assist companies in mitigating their environmental impact. The technology offers a scalable and reliable method, revolutionising the way emissions are tracked and enabling organisations to identify decarbonisation opportunities.

CO2 AI Launches Solution to Compute Product Emissions at Scale

Paris, 28 June 2024 – CO2 AI has launched what it describes as the first scalable solution aimed at computing carbon emissions for a wide range of products. This new technology is expected to assist companies in their efforts to mitigate their environmental impact.

Traditional methods such as manual Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) have been criticised for being slow, inconsistent, and costly. A 2023 Carbon Survey conducted by CO2 AI and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) revealed that a mere 38% of companies received adequate product-level data from their suppliers. The findings highlighted a need for more efficient and comprehensive systems for tracking carbon emissions.

CO2 AI’s newly introduced solution claims to provide a scalable and reliable method to compute emissions, adhering to leading industry standards. “We’re proud to enable sustainability leaders to transparently respond to increasing customer requests and create more eco-friendly products,” said Charlotte Degot, CEO and Co-Founder of CO2 AI.

Proprietary Innovation for Emission Computation

The new system employs an advanced computation engine that enriches raw data and apportions emissions across the product development cycle. Leveraging Generative AI, the technology can match relevant emission factors to product data within minutes—a process that traditionally could take several months.

Symrise, a company that manufactures 35,000 products for 6,000 customers in 150 countries, has adopted CO2 AI’s platform. The company aims to achieve Net Zero in direct emissions and a 30% reduction in indirect emissions by 2030. “We are delighted to start a collaboration with CO2 AI to measure product-level emissions at scale, from our 10,000 raw materials to our 90 production sites,” explained Claire Du Peloux, Sustainability Project Manager at Symrise.

Transparent and Traceable Emissions Data

CO2 AI ensures that all emissions data and computation methods are recorded in a single, verifiable source. The methodology complies with a range of standards such as PACT, TfS, PEF, ISO 14067, and ISO 14044. These standards are crucial for regulatory compliance and provide a structured framework for emissions tracking.

Unveiling Decarbonization Opportunities

Detailed product footprinting is integral for identifying decarbonisation opportunities. Through the data provided by CO2 AI, sustainability and R&D teams can pinpoint emissions hotspots and simulate changes either at the product or portfolio level. This facilitates eco-design and can lead to substantial reductions in a company’s overall carbon footprint.

Enhancing Collaboration to Reach Net Zero

It is widely acknowledged that indirect emissions from suppliers constitute about 75% of a company’s total carbon footprint. Therefore, collaboration with suppliers is vital for achieving sustainability goals. CO2 AI’s solution enables users to easily export and share product footprints, thereby promoting transparency and collaborative efforts towards decarbonisation across entire industries.

CO2 AI’s initiative appears set to provide a new tool in the broader effort to address climate change. While the system offers potential benefits, its long-term success will likely depend on widespread adoption and integration into existing corporate sustainability frameworks.

About CO2 AI

CO2 AI, an end-to-end sustainability platform, assists large and complex organisations in measuring their environmental impact, identifying actionable levers, and realising significant reductions using artificial intelligence.
