Dr. Will Cavendish from Arup highlights the pivotal role of artificial intelligence in combating climate change, citing its potential in reducing carbon emissions in the built environment.

Dr. Will Cavendish, Global Digital Services Leader at Arup, has emphasized the critical role of artificial intelligence (AI) in addressing the climate crisis. In a letter published on July 7, 2024, Cavendish argued that while the energy consumption of AI systems warrants scrutiny, its impact is relatively minor compared to sectors like construction and transport. He highlighted that AI can significantly contribute to decarbonization, particularly in the built environment. Innovations facilitated by AI can reduce reliance on polluting materials such as concrete, minimize the carbon footprint of energy and transport systems, and promote the reuse and repurposing of existing structures. Cavendish called for continuous improvement in the efficiency and responsible development of AI to accelerate the green transition.
