AI Artivism: Rizzy Akanji’s Mission to Highlight Sickle Cell Disorder

Rizzy Akanji, the founder of Akanji Studio, integrates artificial intelligence (AI) with digital art to raise awareness about sickle cell disorder. Akanji’s work, infused with Afro-futurism and Afro-surrealism, draws from his Yoruba heritage and personal experiences living with sickle cell disease.

Akanji’s upcoming group exhibition, “Creating Beyond Sickle Cell,” offers a platform for creatives affected by the disorder. The exhibition aims to share stories of resilience and amplify the voices of the sickle cell community.

Akanji uses AI as an extension of his creative capabilities, combining digital graphic skills with machine-generated images. He asserts that AI-generated art, when curated by human creativity, holds profound emotional and social significance.

The exhibition “Creating Beyond Sickle Cell” was on view from May 3 to 5, 2024. Further information on Akanji Studio’s future artworks can be found on their website and Instagram.
