AI-Generated Photos of Celebrities Stir Controversy at 2024 Met Gala

At the 2024 Met Gala, images of pop stars Katy Perry and Rihanna surfaced on social media, claiming to show them on the red carpet, though both were absent from the event. Advanced AI techniques created these convincing photos, causing considerable confusion among fans and even deceiving Perry’s mother.

Perry, 39, humorously addressed the situation on Instagram, sharing two AI-generated images along with a text from her mother who believed them to be real. Perry clarified her absence by captioning, “Couldn’t make it to the MET, had to work,” and warned her mother with “lol mom the AI got you too, BEWARE!”

Similarly, AI-generated photos of Rihanna, 36, also made rounds online. Originally slated to attend, Rihanna had to cancel last minute due to the flu. The faked images depicted her in a flowing white gown adorned with green vines and flowers, a look that she teased would be simpler than her previous Met Gala appearances.

While the actual event saw numerous celebrities like Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Gwendoline Christie, the realistic AI-created images of absent stars highlighted the increasing capabilities, and potential pitfalls, of AI-generated media in the digital age.
