AI Gun Detection Innovator ZeroEyes Raises Over $53M in Series B Funding

PHILADELPHIA, June 28, 2024 – ZeroEyes, an AI-driven gun detection and situational awareness technology firm, announced today that it has successfully secured more than $53 million in Series B funding. The funding round, which exceeded its initial target, was predominantly led by Sorenson Capital and included significant contributions from Intel Capital and BroadLight Capital among others.

In a country grappling with gun-related violence, ZeroEyes aims to provide an innovative solution to enhance public safety. The company’s integrative software uses artificial intelligence to identify firearms via existing digital security cameras. Once a weapon is detected, real-time data is sent to their U.S.-based operations center where trained military and law enforcement veterans validate the threat before alerting local authorities and on-site staff within seconds.

“ZeroEyes functions as an unobtrusive force multiplier designed to secure schools, businesses, and other organisations against gun-related incidents,” stated Mike Lahiff, CEO and co-founder of ZeroEyes. “We envision our software becoming as ubiquitous as fire alarms—an essential safety measure in every building.”

Though the concept may sound futuristic, it addresses a pressing need in various sectors, including education, commercial enterprises, transportation, and governmental bodies. The company currently safeguards thousands of buildings across 42 states, highlighting the robust demand for such technology.

Beyond technical prowess, ZeroEyes has strategically aligned itself with experts who bring years of military and security experience to the table. “Effective gun detection technology is a complex task,” remarked Rob Rueckert, Partner at Sorenson Capital. “The ZeroEyes team, comprised of extensively trained military professionals, utilises comprehensive AI-forward software to enhance safety in communities nationwide.”

The core technology functions by layering onto pre-existing digital security systems. Upon detecting a firearm, images are sent to the ZeroEyes Operations Center (ZOC)—operational around the clock and manned by U.S. military and law enforcement veterans. If the threat is confirmed, alerts containing detailed intelligence, such as visual descriptions and the weapon type, are dispatched to first responders within 3 to 5 seconds.

“The spectre of gun violence has profoundly changed the American education system, posing a recurring threat to students, educators, and families,” said Mark Lydon, Managing Director at Intel Capital. “By leveraging AI to enhance physical safety, particularly in schools, ZeroEyes offers a compelling solution to one of society’s most critical challenges.”

The newly acquired capital will bolster ZeroEyes’ growth strategy, enabling the company to invest in channel partnership programmes, advanced research and development, and the expansion of its Gun Violence Research Center. Founded by former Navy SEALs and elite technologists, ZeroEyes also offers consulting, installation services, and active shooter drill training, underscoring its commitment to comprehensive security measures.

Recognised by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a promising anti-terrorism technology, ZeroEyes’ patented solution is the first video analytics technology to receive the SAFETY Act DT&E Designation. The company’s clientele spans a broad spectrum including the Department of Defense, public K-12 school districts, higher education institutions, healthcare facilities, commercial properties, and large retail stores.

While the aim of ZeroEyes is to provide a proactive, human-verified, AI-based gun detection solution, the breadth of sectors adopting their technology suggests a rising trust in AI-driven safety measures. As gun-related violence continues to be a significant concern, the company’s services could mark a transformative step in public safety protocols.
