As AI technology reshapes industries, concerns about job displacement emerge. However, reports suggest that AI will complement human abilities, creating new job roles and emphasising the importance of upskilling.
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly impacting various aspects of work, life, and business, epitomized by the Collins Dictionary naming “AI” as the word of the year for 2023. This development brings forward questions about AI’s role in the future job market. Despite technology advancing, the majority of jobs will still require human involvement.
The World Economic Forum forecasts that AI will be a net job creator up to 2027, indicating that instead of replacing human jobs, AI will enhance human creativity and productivity. Current data reveals that over half of workforce skills need revision due to AI’s influence. Consequently, AI skills are increasingly critical, with 66% of business leaders unwilling to hire candidates lacking AI proficiency.
Emerging roles such as AI trainers, auditors, and ethicists highlight the importance of reskilling and upskilling. Many companies are investing in AI training programs to address talent gaps. In India, 94% of tech firms are engaged in employee upskilling due to AI advancements, with tech giants establishing AI research centers for education and certification.
While AI will significantly affect job functions, it will largely augment rather than replace human skills. AI should be seen as an enhancement to human capabilities, facilitating daily tasks and improving the quality of work.
