AI technology is reshaping education with personalised learning platforms like Khanmigo, benefiting students from all backgrounds. Research shows AI’s positive impact on student performance and practical learning experiences. However, challenges in implementation and potential biases require cautious consideration. Experts stress the importance of government policies to ensure responsible AI use while maximising its benefits for all students.

AI’s Role in Transforming Education

AI technology is increasingly seen as a potential game-changer in education, with various platforms emerging to support and personalize learning experiences for students. AI tools like Khanmigo from Khan Academy offer 24/7 educational assistance, challenging students to think critically. Such platforms are particularly beneficial for students from low-income backgrounds, promising improved equity.

Research supports these benefits. A 2024 University of Oxford study found that Ghanaian students using an AI-powered math tutor via WhatsApp had significantly higher math growth scores compared to those who did not. AI also aids low performers by addressing knowledge gaps and enhancing productivity.

Beyond individual assistance, AI facilitates new methods of practical learning, such as simulating real-world environments. Joseph South of the International Society for Technology in Education and Christophe Mallet of Bodyswaps highlight AI’s role in transforming classroom dynamics, saving educators time on planning and assessments, and providing tailored learning experiences.

Despite the excitement, challenges remain. AI’s susceptibility to errors and potential biases necessitates careful implementation. Privacy concerns and the risk of over-reliance on technology, potentially affecting students’ learning processes, must be addressed. Moreover, discrepancies in AI adoption could widen the skills gap among students.

Experts like Hadi Partovi of Code.org emphasize the need for government policies to ensure responsible AI use in education. While AI’s influence grows, the focus remains on adapting educational methods to leverage its benefits without compromising quality or equity.
