Executives from Amazon and Meta voice concerns about the impact of the new AI regulations in Europe, suggesting potential hindrances to innovation and research. The need for balanced and tailored regulations is emphasised to avoid stifling innovation in various AI applications.
At the annual VivaTech conference in Paris, Amazon and Meta executives expressed concerns about the European Union’s new AI regulations.
Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist, questioned the regulation’s impact on research and development, suggesting it may hinder innovation. He downplayed fears that AI could soon surpass human intelligence, emphasizing that current AI concerns are overestimated and manageable with future safeguards.
Amazon’s CTO, Werner Vogels, also warned that excessive regulation could stifle innovation, particularly in fields with minimal risks. Vogels highlighted the need for balanced regulation tailored to specific AI applications, advocating for policies that small and large companies can realistically implement.
The discussions occurred the same week the EU approved its pioneering AI Act, aimed at increasing transparency and imposing bans on certain AI uses in Europe.
