Apple unveiled its collaboration with OpenAI at the Worldwide Developers Conference, introducing AI models known as ‘Apple Intelligence’ in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. The partnership aims to enhance device capabilities while prioritising data privacy and security.
Apple has announced a major partnership with OpenAI during its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10, 2023, at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California. Apple’s CEO Tim Cook, alongside Craig Federighi and John Giannandrea, introduced “Apple Intelligence,” a suite of AI models integrated into its operating systems: iOS 18, iPadOS18, and macOS Sequoia.
The collaboration involves embedding OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Apple’s devices, allowing it to handle complex tasks and integrate within the existing framework of Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri. Apple emphasized the privacy and security of its on-device AI models, which operate on a 3-billion parameter system. For tasks requiring additional computational power, private cloud servers will be used.
Despite assurances about data privacy, Elon Musk criticized the partnership over potential security issues, declaring that Apple devices would be banned from his companies if the integration proceeded. The move highlights Apple’s strategic effort to catch up with rivals like Google and Microsoft in the AI sector.
