Apple’s WWDC 2024 event, starting June 10, will unveil iOS 18, which will introduce numerous updates to the iPhone’s software. Significant features include a focus on AI advancements:
- AI-enabled Siri: Siri will use large language model (LLM) technology for more natural interactions.
- AI retouching in Apple Photos: Similar to Google’s Magic Eraser, it will allow users to remove objects or people from images.
- AI-generated playlists in Apple Music: These can be created using text prompts.
- Voice memo transcription: Voice memos will be transcribed in real-time into text.
- AI-generated emojis: Custom emojis created by AI will be introduced.
- AI-generated emails: The Mail app will feature AI-generated emails.
Other expected non-AI features include better route planning in Apple Maps, animated text messages, customizable app icon placement, color-changing app icons, a refreshed settings menu, and more realistic Siri voices.
Separately, a study by research group Epoch AI projects that tech companies will exhaust publicly available data for AI training by 2026-2032. This scarcity could impede advances in AI, forcing companies to consider alternative data sources or develop synthetic data, which has lower quality and may lead to degraded AI performance.
