BT has announced an increased utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) to combat hacking threats targeting its business customers. The company is leveraging AI to analyze data from attacks and suggest policies for protection. This initiative is part of BT’s broader efforts to enhance cybersecurity for British businesses, which have faced significant hacking incidents, including the cases of Capita, Royal Mail, and British Airways.
BT’s AI technology, known as Eagle-i, was launched in 2021. It uses attack data to inform companies about the necessary firewall policies to prevent future attacks. The company’s CEO, Bas Burger, highlighted the importance of such technology in modernizing businesses, despite it being a source of stress for many company directors and executives.
BT owns 725 AI-related patents and patent applications across Europe, the US, and China. The firm is not only focusing on cybersecurity but also employing AI to detect and resolve network faults, thereby improving fix times.
A recent study conducted by BT involving 2,000 business leaders revealed that 86% of directors view technology as a stress factor, even as 88% are investing in new technology to enhance productivity and gain a competitive edge. Subsequently, BT plans to reduce its workforce by up to 55,000 by 2030, replacing around 10,000 jobs with AI.
In another development, OpenAI is set to announce new features for its ChatGPT and GPT-4 AI models. The updates, termed “spring updates,” are expected to introduce enhancements such as a new voice assistant and improved search functionalities. OpenAI’s event, scheduled for May 13, will be livestreamed on its website. This comes amid speculations about a potential new AI search engine from OpenAI, which could intensify competition with Google’s AI initiatives. Recent reports suggest both OpenAI and Google are in discussions with Apple to integrate their chatbots into the next iPhone.
