On October 25, 2023, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI jointly announced the appointment of Chris Meserole as the inaugural Executive Director of the Frontier Model Forum. This newly formed industry body is dedicated to ensuring the safe and responsible development and use of frontier AI models. The announcement also included the creation of a new AI Safety Fund, exceeding $10 million, aimed at advancing AI safety research.
Chris Meserole, formerly the Director of the Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology Initiative at the Brookings Institution, will lead the Forum’s efforts. His responsibilities include promoting AI safety research, identifying best practices, and sharing knowledge with policymakers, academics, and civil society.
The AI Safety Fund, supported by philanthropic partners like the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, will support independent researchers globally. This initiative underscores the commitment of the Forum members to address the safety challenges associated with AI systems.
The Forum intends to issue its first call for proposals for the AI Safety Fund in the coming months.
