Current and former employees from OpenAI and Google DeepMind advocate for more transparency and protections in the AI industry due to concerns over inadequate oversight and regulatory frameworks. The call highlights the importance of sharing risks and limitations of AI technologies and addressing gaps in whistleblower safeguards.

A coalition of current and former employees from OpenAI and Google DeepMind has issued a public letter calling for enhanced transparency and whistleblower protections within the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. The letter, published Tuesday, highlights significant concerns regarding the lack of effective oversight in AI development.

The signatories, including 11 current and former OpenAI employees and two from Google DeepMind, stress the necessity for AI companies to share more information about the potential risks and limitations of their technologies. They emphasize that current legal protections for whistleblowers are inadequate as they mainly address illegal activities, whereas many AI-related risks remain unregulated.

OpenAI, in response, asserted its commitment to safety and transparency, pointing to its anonymous integrity hotline and Safety and Security Committee. However, former OpenAI machine-learning engineer Daniel Ziegler voiced skepticism about the company’s pledge to these values, citing the strong commercial pressures to advance quickly.

The letter follows reports of restrictive agreements enforced by OpenAI to prevent departing employees from speaking openly about their work. Recently, two notable OpenAI employees, co-founder Ilya Sutskever and safety researcher Jan Leike, left the company, criticizing its shift away from safety priorities.

This call for increased transparency and protection in the AI industry comes amid rapid advancements in AI technologies and ongoing debates about their societal impact.
