Society of Editors Conference Discusses Role of AI in Journalism

On April 30, 2024, at the Society of Editors Conference, a panel of editors agreed that artificial intelligence (AI) holds potential benefits for journalism but also poses significant challenges.

The conference discussed the integration of AI in newsrooms, highlighting that while AI tools can assist journalists with tasks such as production, administration, and verification, they cannot replace the intrinsic value of on-the-ground reporting. An example of AI application in media is the Financial Times’ upcoming generative AI tool for subscribers, which will utilize content published over the past 20 years to answer user questions.

Tami Hoffman of ITN expressed concerns about the use of AI by non-media companies, particularly issues related to copyright, attribution, and audience relationship dynamics. Pete Clifton, editor-in-chief of PA news agency, highlighted the need for careful implementation and ongoing communication about AI’s capabilities and limitations.

Blathnaid Healy from BBC News discussed the challenge of maintaining audience engagement in a fragmented digital landscape, with consumers increasingly turning to platforms like TikTok and Instagram for news. She emphasized the importance of understanding AI within the broader context of digital transformation.

Jody Doherty-Cove, head of editorial AI at Newsquest, noted the utility of AI in local media, with AI-supported reporters using tools like ChatGPT to draft articles, allowing more time for investigative journalism.

In summary, while AI presents opportunities for enhancing journalistic processes, the consensus was clear that it cannot replace the essential role of human journalists.
