Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, is considering prohibiting the use of Apple devices within his companies following Apple’s integration of OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT. Musk expressed concerns over security implications and questioned Apple’s ability to safeguard data privacy, leading to a potential ban scenario.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and X, recently stated that he may prohibit the use of Apple devices within his companies. This potential ban comes in response to Apple’s decision to integrate OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, into its devices like the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, which Musk considers an “unacceptable security violation.”
Apple’s new feature allows users to access AI-powered tools, including ChatGPT, across their devices. In a post on X, Musk expressed his concerns about the security implications and indicated that Apple devices might have to be checked at the door and stored in a Faraday cage if the integration occurs at the OS level. He criticized Apple for relying on OpenAI for AI capabilities and doubted the company’s ability to ensure data security and privacy.
Apple has responded by stating that user consent is required for sharing data with OpenAI and that no data requests are stored during the process. Musk, one of the original founders of OpenAI but now a competitor through his AI firm xAI, which developed its own chatbot Grok, has had a contentious relationship with OpenAI, accusing it of deviating from its original mission for profit motives.
This development ties into Apple’s recent launch of its new generative AI tools during the Worldwide Developers Conference. The tools, known as “Apple Intelligence,” will be available with the upcoming iOS 18, which is scheduled for release later this year. However, the AI features will only be accessible on the latest iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models due to the high computational demands, excluding most previous iPhone models.
