During his appearance at VivaTech 2024 in Paris, Elon Musk discussed the potential job disruptions caused by AI, proposing the concept of ‘universal high income’. Musk expressed concerns about AI advancement outpacing human intelligence and warned about the impact of social media on children.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, made significant remarks on the future of artificial intelligence (AI) during his remote appearance at VivaTech 2024 in Paris on Thursday. Musk, 52, predicted a future dominated by AI, stating it could eliminate most jobs, leaving employment optional. He suggested a need for “universal high income” (UHI), distinct from universal basic income, to ensure affordability of basic needs.

Musk expressed concern over the rapid advancement of AI, declaring it his “biggest fear.” He drew parallels with the “Culture Book Series” by Ian Banks, which envisions a utopia governed by advanced technology. He questioned the emotional fulfillment of humans in a job-free world, highlighting the potential role of humans in imbuing AI with meaning.

Additionally, Musk warned parents about the potential negative impact of social media on children, advising them to limit their exposure due to manipulative algorithms designed to maximize user engagement.

Research from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab indicates that workplaces are adopting AI slower than anticipated, with jobs requiring high emotional intelligence less susceptible to automation. Despite these assurances, Musk and other experts foresee AI becoming significantly more capable, potentially outpacing human intelligence by the end of 2025.
