Elon Musk’s xAI Secures $6bn, Aiming for AI Supercomputing Powerhouse
Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has completed a $6 billion investment round, positioning itself as a major contender in the AI industry. This funding round values xAI at $18 billion before the new investment. Founded only a year ago, xAI has swiftly developed its own large language model (LLM), a core technology behind generative AI capable of creating human-like text, images, and more.
The investment comes from several familiar Musk collaborators, including Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Fidelity, and Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Holding. The funds are earmarked for bringing xAI’s first products to market, building advanced infrastructure, and accelerating future R&D.
In addition to the funding news, it was reported that Musk plans to build the world’s most powerful AI supercomputer. xAI aims to use 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs to create a machine significantly larger than existing GPU clusters. This initiative is part of xAI’s broader mission to understand the universe and develop AI systems that are “truthful, competent, and maximally beneficial.”
xAI’s Grok chatbot, launched in November 2023, is marketed as an alternative to existing AI systems like ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. Grok is designed to address a broader range of questions and incorporate humor, positioning itself as a unique player in the AI landscape.
