Showrunner, the latest offering from Fable Studio, allows users to create personalised TV episodes with AI technology. The streaming service offers a variety of animated series, sparking discussion on AI’s role in the entertainment industry.

Fable Studio has launched Showrunner, an AI-generated streaming service that enables users to create tailor-made TV episodes with simple prompts. Announced on May 31, 2024, Showrunner offers ten animated series, including “Ikiru Shinu,” a dark horror anime, “Sim Francisco,” an anthology about life in a titular city, and “Exit Valley,” a satire of Silicon Valley.

Viewers can watch pre-designed episodes or use their own prompts to generate custom scenes and full episodes. Fable Studio previously demonstrated the technology with an AI-generated “South Park” episode that, despite initial excitement, showed limitations in quality.

The launch of Showrunner follows the backdrop of recent Hollywood strikes, highlighting concerns about AI’s impact on the entertainment industry. While the technology might inspire more creative involvement from viewers initially, its long-term viability and the potential for widespread industry adoption remain uncertain.
