Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw advocates for global collaboration to address the risks posed by unethical use of AI, highlighting India’s upcoming AI mission and the need for regulation to safeguard social institutions and democracies.
Union Minister of Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, emphasized the necessity to curb the unethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) during the inaugural event of the Global India AI Summit 2024 in New Delhi. Held on July 3, Vaishnaw highlighted plans to launch India’s AI mission within the next few months, aiming to leverage AI in agriculture, education, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals.
Vaishnaw pointed out the benefits of AI are countered by significant risks, including threats to social institutions and democracy. Referring to the recent Lok Sabha Elections, he noted the amplification of misinformation through AI. He stressed the importance of global cooperation to regulate AI, mentioning India’s role as the current chair of the Global Partnership for AI (GPAI).
During his speech, Vaishnaw also underscored the Indian government’s efforts in creating a state-run platform providing resources such as compute power, high-quality datasets, and a common framework for AI model training. Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Jitin Prasada, reinforced the need for global collaboration to address AI risks, emphasizing the technology’s potential threat to democracies. The summit will focus on various aspects of AI regulation over its two-day duration.
