Google and HP have joined forces to bring Project Starline, an immersive video conferencing solution, to the market in 2025. The technology offers lifelike communication experiences by displaying 3D images of meeting participants, aiming to revolutionize virtual meetings in hybrid work settings.

Google and HP have announced a collaboration to commercialize Project Starline, an immersive video conferencing solution, for a 2025 market launch. Initially introduced at the 2021 Google I/O conference, Project Starline has undergone extensive development and testing to enhance its functionality.

Project Starline aims to create more natural remote communication by displaying 3D images of meeting participants, providing realistic depth and movement. This is achieved by tracking head and eye positions to produce corresponding animations. The solution is targeted for hybrid working environments, leveraging HP’s expertise in enterprise communications technology to distribute the product globally.

Alex Cho, President of Personal Systems at HP, emphasized the importance of immersive collaboration in hybrid work settings, noting that body language significantly impacts communication. Google’s internal and partner-based tests have indicated improved attentiveness, memory recall, and a sense of presence during virtual meetings.

The product aligns with existing video conferencing services such as Google Meet and Zoom. Previously, Google conducted early access trials with organizations like Salesforce, T-Mobile, and WeWork.

Recent advancements include the use of AI to refine the device’s design, making it more compact and realistic by improving 3D rendering. This development eliminates the need for complex AR or VR wearables, thereby addressing issues like Zoom fatigue by providing a more engaging virtual environment.

The announcement coincides with Google I/O 2024, where further updates on AR/VR/MR solutions are expected, along with other technology innovations.
