Google’s Gemini AI App Launches in UK and Europe

Google has launched its Gemini AI assistant app in the UK and Europe, expanding its reach to a broader audience. As of June 5, 2024, the Gemini app is available on both the Google Play Store for Android devices and the App Store for Apple devices, offering a mobile version of the AI chatbot previously released in the US.

The Gemini app functions similarly to its desktop counterpart, permitting users to interact with the AI through text, voice, and images. Users can ask for help with tasks such as changing a flat tire or composing messages. The app integrates seamlessly with Pixel phones and other supported devices, where it can replace the traditional Google Assistant, allowing users to activate the AI with the “Hey Google” voice command or other simple gestures.

Jules Walter, group product manager of the Gemini division at Google, highlighted that this expansion is a significant step toward creating a comprehensive AI assistant. Despite facing some controversy, including issues with image generation, Google proceeds with its plan to enhance user experience with AI-driven functionalities.

The rollout coincides with increasing competition in the AI sector, as evidenced by recent developments from tech giants like Microsoft and OpenAI. Google has also launched Gemini Advanced, a premium version of the AI assistant, and built its latest Pixel phones with integrated AI features.

This move underscores Google’s commitment to expanding the accessibility and capabilities of its AI technologies.
