Huawei Technologies presented significant developments in operating systems and AI technology at its developer conference in Dongguan, China. During the event, Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, emphasized the company’s rapid progress, highlighting that it achieved in 10 years what it took the US and Europe over 30 years to accomplish in building an independent operating system.
Launched in 2019 following US restrictions on Google’s Android, Huawei’s HarmonyOS has been deployed on more than 900 million devices. Yu noted that the company’s AI infrastructure, Ascend, is now the second most popular globally, following Nvidia.
Huawei’s smartphone market saw considerable growth, with HarmonyOS-equipped models like Mate 60 driving a 68% rise in sales in the first five months of the year. In the first quarter of 2024, HarmonyOS surpassed Apple’s iOS to become the second-best-selling mobile OS in China, capturing a 17% market share, according to research firm Counterpoint.
