The collaboration between Kansas Proving Grounds and SkyScoutAI aims to utilise AI and drone technology to enhance wildfire detection and response, with a focus on protecting lives and property while promoting environmental sustainability.
Kansas Proving Grounds Partners with SkyScoutAI Innovations to Deploy AI-Powered Drones for Wildfire Prevention
PARSONS, Kan., April 23, 2024 – The Kansas Proving Grounds at Great Plains Industrial Park has announced a collaboration with SkyScoutAI Innovations Inc. to deploy AI-driven drone technology aimed at combating wildfires. This initiative is designed to improve wildfire detection and response, leveraging advanced aerial surveillance methods.
Great Plains Industrial Park, which spans over 14,000 acres, is noted for its focus on sustainability and innovation, being America’s first carbon-neutral industrial park. The new partnership will introduce SkyScoutAI’s wildfire detection system, which integrates drones and satellite technology to monitor and address wildfire threats proactively.
Brad Reams, Director of the Great Plains Industrial Park, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, stating, “We are excited to work with SkyScoutAI to deploy their advanced wildfire detection technology. This move underscores our commitment to public safety and environmental protection.”
Scott Shepherd, CEO of SkyScoutAI, emphasised the strategic importance of this partnership. “Collaborating with the Kansas Proving Grounds allows us to position our technology centrally, enhancing our ability to detect and combat wildfires efficiently. This initiative will significantly contribute to protecting lives and property locally and globally.”
The project will involve training local individuals and veterans from across North America as wildfire drone pilots. These pilots will not only monitor the park for potential fire outbreaks but will also take their expertise back to their respective communities.
SkyScoutAI’s system uses a combination of satellite imagery and drone surveillance to identify early signs of wildfires. Once a potential threat is detected, drones equipped with fire retardants are deployed to contain or extinguish the fire. Additionally, the technology can pre-treat areas with retardants to prevent fires from starting.
The system’s mobility is a key feature, with drones housed in transportable trailers that can be quickly dispatched to fire-prone regions. This flexibility, coupled with the system’s scalability, makes it a valuable tool for both urban and rural areas facing increased wildfire risks.
As climate change exacerbates wildfire incidents, innovative solutions like those offered by SkyScoutAI become increasingly vital. The partnership aims to have the pilot project operational by the upcoming wildfire season, focusing initially on the Great Plains Industrial Park before potentially expanding to other regions.
