Marketing Expert Sabri Suby Gets Scammed 100 Times to Study Online Fraud

Sabri Suby, a judge on Shark Tank Australia and a digital marketing expert, intentionally fell victim to 100 online scams to understand their mechanisms and origins. Suby, who is 38 years old, elaborated on his experience in a bid to expose the increasing complexity and prevalence of online scams, particularly those involving AI technologies and robo-calling.

Suby’s investigation was facilitated by social media algorithms that directed him to various scam ads after his initial interactions. He encountered a range of fraudulent schemes, including scammy products and AI-generated endorsements from deepfakes of popular celebrities and influencers such as Mr Beast, Elon Musk, and Scarlett Johansson.

One notable example Suby highlighted was the Pure Himalayan Shilajit Resin, which was marketed with false and exaggerated claims about health benefits and testosterone boosts.

Suby’s findings also revealed scams leveraging deepfake technology to exploit high-profile personalities to lend credibility to ostensibly legitimate offers, such as iPhones for a dollar and gambling apps.

The phenomenon is further explained by Sahra O’Doherty, president of the Australian Association of Psychologists, who stated that these scams often prey on people’s emotions and insecurities. She emphasized the importance of consumers conducting thorough research before making purchases based on social media advertisements.

Suby advises individuals to apply critical thinking and scepticism to all online content. Recognizing the risks posed by internet scams, especially to younger audiences, he advocates for educating children about the dangers of online fraud.

In conclusion, Sabri Suby’s personal experiment underscores the need for heightened awareness and caution in navigating the digital landscape filled with increasingly sophisticated scams.
