“Eternal You” Documentary Explores the Concept of Digital Afterlife

The documentary “Eternal You,” directed by Hans Block and Moritz Riesewieck, examines the emerging practice of creating digital simulations of deceased loved ones through AI technology, known as AI griefbots. The film delves into whether these simulations offer genuine solace to the bereaved or hinder the natural grieving process.

Prominent examples include Canadian writer Joshua Barbeau, who, after losing his girlfriend Jessica, used Project December to simulate her texting style, resulting in conversations that felt authentic to him. Technology critic Sara M Watson and MIT sociologist Sherry Turkle provide expert insights into the workings and implications of this technology. Turkle raises concerns about the societal and personal impacts of finding comfort in artificial simulations rather than facing actual grief.

The documentary presents both touching and disturbing instances of individuals interacting with digital replicas of their lost loved ones, highlighting the mixed emotions and ethical dilemmas involved. “Eternal You” will be released in UK and Irish cinemas on June 28th.
