Public Knowledge, alongside over 80 organizations from industry, academia, and civil society, has called on Congress to prioritize the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) funding for fiscal year 2025. The letter advocates for a $48 million budget request essential for advancing AI research, standards, and testing through NIST’s U.S. AI Safety Institute.

The letter emphasizes NIST’s historical role in developing technical standards and highlights concerns over recent budget cuts that could hinder responsible AI development. Chris Lewis, President of Public Knowledge, stresses the importance of supporting NIST to maintain America’s leadership in AI innovation and governance.
