Discover how the PR Begg Museum in Adelaide, South Australia, pays tribute to the groundbreaking contributions of Dr. Percy Raymond Begg, known as Tick Begg, in transforming orthodontics and advancing dental care. Explore the museum’s collection of artifacts highlighting Begg’s innovative techniques and learn about the ongoing technological advancements shaping modern dentistry.

The PR Begg Museum in Adelaide, South Australia, honors Dr. Percy Raymond Begg, widely known as Tick Begg, for his revolutionary contributions to orthodontics. Begg, who began treating patients in Adelaide in 1926, modernized braces and developed techniques that significantly advanced dental care. He was among the first to practice selective tooth extraction to correct overcrowding, deviating from the non-extraction methods of his mentor, Dr. Edward Hartley Angle.

Begg’s innovative use of new brackets, stainless steel wire, light forces, and a systematic treatment approach transformed orthodontics, leading Adelaide to be recognized as a global center for the specialty. The museum houses various dental artifacts, including tooth molds and equipment, celebrating Begg’s impact on modern dentistry.

The advancements continue today with digital dentistry and AI. Khaled Ahmed from the Royal Melbourne dental hospital highlights how these technologies enable faster and more precise dental treatments, including 3D-printed restorations and robotic-assisted implant placements. Innovations such as the Yomi robot, approved in the US, demonstrate the ongoing evolution influenced by Begg’s pioneering work.

The museum stands as a testament to Begg’s enduring influence on orthodontics worldwide.
