Country music legend Randy Travis returns with his first single in nearly a decade, ‘Where That Came From,’ created using artificial intelligence to recreate his vocals. The release marks a poignant moment for Travis and the music industry, showcasing the integration of AI in music production.
Country music star Randy Travis has released a new single titled “Where That Came From,” marking his first new music since suffering a stroke in 2013. Travis, who was diagnosed with viral cardiomyopathy and subsequently developed aphasia, has not put out new music for nearly a decade. The release was made possible through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to recreate his vocals, with the approval from Travis and his wife, Mary Travis.
The song was unveiled on Friday and features vocals generated by AI from Travis’s extensive body of work over the past 28 years. This innovative approach was suggested by Warner Music Nashville Co-President Cris Lacy and executed by Travis’s longtime producer, Kyle Lehning. The song, a romantic ballad written by Scotty Emerick and John Scott, was selected for its alignment with Travis’s vocal style.
Mary Travis described the emotional experience her husband underwent upon hearing the final version, noting his initial surprise and subsequent emotional reaction. This release is a significant moment for Travis fans and the music industry, which has seen an increasing integration of AI in creative processes.
