Traffic and Parking Control Co., Inc. (TAPCO) has announced an upgrade to its wrong-way alert systems through its new collaboration with multinational engineering and technology company, Bosch. The announcement was made on 23 April 2024, detailing how the integration of Bosch’s video analytics technology will improve the accuracy and responsiveness of the systems designed to prevent wrong-way traffic collisions, which are often fatal.
TAPCO is known for its role in developing and deploying traffic safety solutions, particularly in the area of wrong-way traffic detection. The company has led the field for over fifteen years, aiming to enhance road safety by providing real-time alerts to both drivers and relevant authorities.
The new partnership with Bosch brings advanced ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) cameras that utilise edge-enabled video analytics. This technology processes data within the camera itself, negating the need for a central server, which significantly reduces latency in detection alerts. According to TAPCO Vice President Morgan Marks, the goal is to leverage cutting-edge technology to mitigate the risks associated with wrong-way driving events.
Bosch’s smart cameras are designed to endure various environmental disturbances such as headlight glare, extreme weather conditions, and vibrations, thus maintaining high accuracy in detecting wrong-way vehicles. The cameras are capable of providing instantaneous alerts, which are crucial for immediate action to prevent potential accidents.
“When a wrong-way driving event is detected, immediate action is needed to stop the driver and avoid accidents,” Lewis Stallworth, Bosch’s Business Development Manager – Smart Cities, noted. He highlighted that the instant detection capability of these cameras will facilitate quick and accurate responses, thereby enhancing roadway safety.
Upon detecting a wrong-way vehicle, the upgraded TAPCO systems will activate visual alerts, such as LED-enhanced BlinkerSigns, beacons, or LegendViz® internally-illuminated signs to prompt the driver to correct their direction. If the driver does not self-correct, the system employs TAPCO’s BlinkLink® smart city software to capture and stream live video, sending real-time notifications to traffic management centers and enforcement agencies.
This software can also integrate with existing transportation infrastructure, potentially triggering overhead message boards or sending alerts to connected vehicles about the ongoing danger. This layered approach aims to not only inform wrong-way drivers but also to warn other motorists and authorities promptly, thereby mitigating risks more effectively.
