The United Nations Telecommunications Agency has inaugurated its annual “AI for Good” conference in Geneva to explore the benefits and challenges of artificial intelligence. The event began on Thursday, May 30, 2024, and spans two days, featuring notable figures such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized AI’s transformative potential in various sectors, including education, healthcare, and natural disaster management. He also underscored the need for AI technologies to minimize bias, misinformation, and security threats.

Launched 18 months ago, OpenAI’s ChatGPT exemplifies AI’s recent advancements and has sparked both excitement and concern among various stakeholders. Other tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are also heavily investing in AI.

The conference addresses the dual nature of AI—its promise and its perils—aiming to help businesses, consumers, and governments navigate this rapidly evolving landscape.
