Explore the tech-art installation ‘Smile AI’ by Matthias Oostrik at the 10th annual Belfast Photo Festival, as it delves into the fusion of digital art, film, and architecture. Discover how Oostrik’s interactive artwork uses AI to transform portraits and spark connections among viewers.

Dutch artist Matthias Oostrik’s latest tech-art installation, “Smile AI,” is part of the 10th annual Belfast Photo Festival. Held at Riddel’s Warehouse on Anne Street in Belfast from June 7-23, the installation explores the intersection of digital art, installation art, film, and architecture.

“Smile AI” immerses viewers in a scenario where artificial intelligence (AI) transforms their portraits into persuasive, smiling replicas, reflecting the theme “Oops! We Automated Bulls**t.” This interactive artwork consists of 48 screens arranged as a spherical machine, using cameras and intricate wiring to complete its tech-noir aesthetic.

Oostrik’s creation aims to spark a connection between the audience and the artwork, as well as among viewers themselves. Oostrik seeks to demystify technology and create a sense of amusement with AI’s interpretation of human expressions. He describes the project as making an AI that humorously mimics and laughs at people, transforming their portraits into laughing images.

The Belfast Photo Festival will feature several other artists, including Richard Mosse with his film “Broken Spectre,” Palestinian-American photographer Adam Rouhana, and Polish artists Barbara Caillot and Aleksandra Karkowska. These exhibits will address themes like climate emergency, rapid digitalization, and ethical considerations surrounding AI.
