Experts debate the role of AI in combating loneliness, while UCL leads a project using social prescribing to address isolation among young people. Both approaches aim to enhance social connections and well-being in society.
Professor Tony Prescott of the University of Sheffield posits that AI could play a significant role in combating human loneliness. Prescott, a cognitive robotics expert, suggests that AI-enabled companionship could offer valuable social interactions, much like the familiar benefits of relationships people have with pets or children’s interactions with dolls. He believes AI can help individuals on the brink of social isolation build self-confidence and improve social skills, breaking the “downward spiral” of loneliness.
This perspective stands in contrast to views from other experts, such as Sherry Turkle from MIT, who caution against the potential for AI connections to diminish the quality of human relationships. Christina Victor from Brunel University questions the effectiveness of AI in fostering meaningful social connections, highlighting the importance of reciprocity in relationships.
In another initiative, University College London (UCL) is leading a project to address loneliness among young people through social prescribing. The project will involve activities such as gardening, fishing, and museum visits for children aged 9 to 13. Researchers will evaluate the impact on reducing isolation, improving mental health, and academic engagement. The project will initially involve 12 schools and 100 pupils, with plans to expand to 30 schools and 600 pupils.
Research indicates high levels of loneliness among young people, particularly those in urban areas or from disadvantaged backgrounds. The program aims to provide tailored support through link workers who will connect children with local activities, thereby enhancing social connections and potentially mitigating the adverse effects of loneliness on physical and mental health.
Both initiatives reflect growing interest in innovative approaches to alleviating loneliness and improving social well-being in different demographics.
