Millions of users worldwide left unable to use ChatGPT as OpenAI works to resolve the issue. Concerns rise over outage cause and scope amidst ongoing popularity and allegations of voice likeness copying.

ChatGPT Outage Affects Millions Globally

ChatGPT, a widely used AI tool developed by OpenAI, experienced a significant outage this morning. Users have been unable to access both the app and website since around 8am BST. According to DownDetector, hundreds of users worldwide have reported issues, with around 79% mentioning general problems, 15% citing issues with the app, and 6% unable to use the website.

OpenAI acknowledged the disruption, stating on its official ChatGPT status page that they are investigating the issue. The downtime prompted users to express their frustrations on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

ChatGPT has seen substantial popularity, with Tooltester reporting an average of 13 million unique visitors per day as of January 2023. This incident follows a recent Microsoft outage that also affected ChatGPT, Bing.com, and DuckDuckGo. OpenAI has yet to provide further details on the current outage’s cause or scope.

Additionally, OpenAI is facing accusations of copying actress Scarlett Johansson’s voice for a recent ChatGPT update, with Johansson claiming the likeness is strikingly similar.
