Home Depot and Target have implemented innovative AI-based technologies, ‘computer vision’ and TruScan respectively, to tackle shoplifting at self-checkout kiosks. This move comes as major U.S. retailers reevaluate their use of self-checkout lanes in response to rising theft incidents.
Home Depot has implemented a new artificial intelligence-based technology to curb shoplifting at its self-checkout kiosks. The technology, termed ‘computer vision,’ employs an array of cameras monitored by AI-powered computers to identify potential theft risks. Alerts are sent to staff if theft is suspected. This approach differs from traditional security staff monitoring standard CCTV footage.
Ann-Marie Campbell, a vice-president at Home Depot, disclosed this development during an earnings update on May 14, where it was also noted that Home Depot’s sales have declined this year. Although initially developed for inventory management, the ‘computer vision’ technology now assists in monitoring shelf organization and preventing theft, referred to as ‘shrinkage’ in retail terms.
In a similar move, Target has introduced a system called TruScan that uses cameras and sensors to detect unscanned items, notifying customers with audio and visual cues. This technology will be installed in all Target stores across the U.S. by the end of the year. Both retail chains have opted to inform investors about these technologies rather than making public announcements or posting warnings in stores.
Several major retailers, including Walmart and Dollar General, are reevaluating their use of self-checkout lanes due to rising theft incidents and operational challenges. Walmart plans to remove self-checkout machines from more stores, while Dollar General is eliminating them from 300 locations with high shoplifting rates and restricting self-checkout transactions in other stores. Additionally, Costco has increased staff presence in self-checkout areas to ensure proper item scanning and membership use.
These actions reflect a broader trend among U.S. retailers seeking to balance labor cost savings with loss prevention and customer service improvement amidst rising theft incidents.
