The first AI Expo for National Competitiveness hosted by the SCSP in Washington D.C. gathered key figures from the military-industrial complex, tech companies, and defense contractors to discuss AI’s role in modern warfare, including its ethical implications and strategic importance.

The inaugural “AI Expo for National Competitiveness” took place on May 7-8, 2024, in Washington D.C. Hosted by the Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP), a think tank created by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, the event brought together America’s military-industrial complex, major technology companies, and defense contractors. The primary sponsor of the conference was Palantir, a software company co-founded by Peter Thiel.

Attendees of the event included notable figures such as Eric Schmidt, Palantir CEO Alex Karp, CIA Deputy Director David Cohen, and Gen. Mark Milley, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The event featured various panels discussing AI’s role in military applications, with a significant focus on AI-powered technologies and their implications for modern warfare.

In one of the standout panels, Alex Karp stressed the importance of using AI in warfare to deter adversaries, referencing recent conflicts and emphasizing the need for aggressive strategies. Gen. Milley highlighted the complexities of modern urban warfare, while Eric Schmidt discussed the increasing relevance of drones and automation in military scenarios.

The conference witnessed discussions on controversial topics, including civilian casualties in conflict zones and the ethics of deploying AI in military operations. An exhibit by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) vividly illustrated the humanitarian impact of war, contrasting the predominantly pro-military sentiment of the event.

This event marks a convergence of technology and defense sectors, reflecting ongoing debates over the ethical implications and strategic necessities of AI in modern warfare.
