New supercomputer set to transform AI in healthcare

New Supercomputer Set to Transform AI in Healthcare

Gainesville, Fla. – Alafia Ai, Inc. has launched the AIVAS supercomputer, a new high-performance personal supercomputer designed to significantly enhance the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare.

Named AIVAS, the supercomputer facilitates the acceleration of molecular dynamics simulations, speeding up complex computations in classical Newtonian and quantum chemistry for systems composed of hundreds to millions of particles. Researchers report experiencing a performance increase of 80 to 100 times over typical personal computers, with only a marginal rise in cost.

Speeding Up Digital Pathology

One notable application is in digital pathology, where AIVAS can execute pixel classification and cell segmentation tasks more than 100 times faster than standard personal computers. Typically, whole-slide scans that take 30 minutes to an hour can be processed in under a minute with AIVAS.

Alafia Ai, Inc. aims to leverage this technology to offer significant advancements in healthcare, covering areas from genetics research to clinical decision support systems. The supercomputer promises to expedite in-silico experiments and bioinformatics pipeline development by multiple orders of magnitude compared to current systems.

Addressing Healthcare Market Needs

Given the increasing complexity of applications in neurology, genetics research, cardiac imaging, and digital pathology, robust computational power has become essential. AIVAS responds to this demand by providing unmatched compute density and energy efficiency for low-latency workflows. It supports next-generation high-throughput sequencing, computational mass spectrometry, and bioinformatics automation, offering more accurate insights and rapid results in clinical settings.

The high-performance supercomputer also enables real-time data visualisation and processing of CT and MRI scans, benefiting applications such as cortical reconstructions and positron emission tomography (PET) reconstruction.

Technical Specifications

AIVAS is equipped with a cloud-native CPU along with four NVIDIA GPUs, capable of over 1,000 trillion operations per second (TOPS). This is equivalent to the computational power of two full cloud-native AI servers. It features an Ampere Max Altra CPU with 128 Arm Neoverse cores, 28,416 NVIDIA CUDA GPU cores, 92GB of GPU unified high-bandwidth memory, and 2TB of unified system memory. Despite its significant computing power, AIVAS maintains high energy efficiency, consuming only 700 watts.

The system offers access to over 1,000 validated software packages, ranging from genomic alignment to sequence mapping, ensuring extensive software support. It promises full control, security, and protection for data and applications, with regular software updates ensuring stability and robustness.

Positive Reception from Healthcare Community

Early users, including researchers from Stanford Medical School and Acacia Clinics, have praised AIVAS. Dr Danielle D. DeSouza, Vice-President of Research at Acacia Clinics and Research Staff at Stanford University, reported significant improvements in their processes. “Performing cortical reconstruction with AIVAS was significantly faster than traditional computers. We reduced individual subject reconstructions from over 24 hours to under 2 hours per subject and could parallelise to perform hundreds of subjects at a time. Clinical trial cohort pre-processing that used to take weeks to months was completed in under a week,” she said.

Enhancing Surgical and Diagnostic Applications

AIVAS empowers surgeons and medical physicists to conduct real-time reconstructions using industry-standard DICOM images and videos. This includes CT and MRI scans, handled efficiently by the parallel processing power of both CPU and GPU with a unified memory architecture.

Alafia Ai, Inc. positions the AIVAS as a critical tool in enhancing AI-driven healthcare solutions, aiming to set a new standard for precision and efficiency in medical applications.
