Visual artist and technologist Nouf Aljowaysir’s new film delves into her identity struggles navigating between Saudi Arabia and the United States, uncovering biases in A.I.’s interpretation of cultural heritage.
Visual artist and technologist Nouf Aljowaysir recently premiered a short film titled “I Asked A.I. Where It Thought I Was From. Its Answer: Nowhere.” Released on June 4, 2024, the film delves into Aljowaysir’s lifelong identity struggles as she navigated between Saudi Arabia and the United States. Seeking clarity in 2020, she explored her ancestral history through personal interviews and archival imagery.
Utilizing computer vision techniques, Aljowaysir questioned an A.I. system about the images, receiving responses that revealed generalizations and stereotypes. The film contrasts these simplistic A.I. interpretations with rich, personal stories from Aljowaysir and her mother, highlighting the limitations and biases in artificial intelligence when it comes to cultural understanding.
Nouf Aljowaysir resides in Brooklyn and continues to explore the intersection of technology and personal identity in her work.
