Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will emphasize the importance of managing AI risks and fostering international collaboration at the Seoul AI Summit, where Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan will focus on AI safety, sustainability, and resilience. The UK Government’s AI Safety Institute’s expansion to San Francisco aims to engage with major AI laboratories and enhance global AI safety standards.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will address the Seoul AI Summit on Tuesday, emphasizing that managing artificial intelligence (AI) risks is a significant responsibility for global leaders. He will highlight the technological opportunities AI presents while underscoring the need for international collaboration to ensure its safety. Sunak will co-host a virtual session with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. The summit includes participants from governments, academia, and AI companies such as Microsoft, Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Anthropic.

Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan will attend the event in Seoul, focusing on AI safety, sustainability, and resilience. Sunak’s comments follow the inaugural Bletchley Park AI Safety Summit held last November, where leaders committed to addressing AI risks and developing an international AI safety report. Sunak’s speech will affirm the importance of safe AI for fostering innovation.

The summit occurs amidst growing debates about AI regulation, with experts pointing out the technology’s potential to boost wellbeing and economic growth while warning of risks like disinformation, job disruption, and inequality.

In related developments, the UK Government’s AI Safety Institute will open a new office in San Francisco to engage with major AI laboratories in Silicon Valley. The institute, announced at the Bletchley Park summit, aims to conduct research and provide evaluations to inform AI safety policies. Preliminary tests of advanced AI models revealed vulnerabilities in security and consistency in producing harmful outputs without sufficient safeguards.

Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan stated that this expansion underscores the UK’s leadership in AI, aiming to establish new international standards on AI safety. The institute’s chairman, Ian Hogarth, highlighted the need for ongoing model evaluations to enhance safety controls and address national security-related risks. The announcements precede further international cooperation at the upcoming Seoul Summit.
